Over the past fifty years, the Los Angeles River has been solely thought of as a flood control channel running from Canoga Park to the Port of Long Beach. However, ongoing transformation of the 51-mile concrete channel into a revitalized linear park has emerged as a catalyst for new opportunities and connectivity in once forgotten neighborhoods. Similar to many major cities, revitalization of rivers and railroads into public spaces—such as New York’s High Line and San Antonio’s River Walk—adds value to surrounding neighborhoods through economic, social and physical health benefits.
The Master Plan goals combined with public and private investment along the River is unlocking new real estate opportunities for repositioning underutilized assets and new mixed-use commercial and residential developments. However, various challenges come along with these opportunities and require collaboration between public agencies, private investors, and community stakeholders.
Panelists will elaborate on the LA River Master Plan’s vision and key milestones as well as hone in on projects that highlight the opportunities along the River from public open space to real estate developments reconnecting the public to the River. The panel pulls together leading experts on the Los Angeles River to share with us how to bring this vision of river revitalization to reality.
