a Day of Action

Joan Jonas, Glenn LigonShirin Neshat, and Mickalene Thomas are among the artists who will launch the first #ArtActionDay on January 20, 2018—the one-year anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration. On that day, a coalition of artists, cultural organizations, and companies like Tumblr and Spotify will host nationwide readings, panel discussions, workshops, and a special Spotify “creativity boost” playlist curated by artist Laurie Anderson.

Organized by The Federation, a group started by Anderson and producers Laura Michalchyshyn and Tanya Selvaratnam in response to Trump’s travel ban, the events will take place in partnership with organizations such as PEN America, The Kitchen, the artist-founded PAC For Freedoms, Film Forum, and Lincoln Center. The website also provides a downloadable kit for DIY activism that can be carried out from anywhere.

“We will use our platforms and our voices to represent that art is essential to democracy,” said Selvaratnam in a statement announcing #ArtActionDay, which was partly inspired by the controversial call for an “art strike” on Inauguration Day. “We decided on that day because this past January 20, arts institutions were encouraged to close their doors in protest of the inauguration. A terrible idea! Never tell artists to be silent. On January 20, we want artists to be more loud and visible than ever.”

Water Conference 2017

A special program exploring global water scarcity challenges and solutions, presented in partnership with O’Melveny & Myers LLP as part of the Pacific Council's Global Water Scarcity Project.

Click here to register for this conference. Contact the Events team at events@pacificcouncil.org or (213) 221-2020 for more information.

The Global Water Scarcity Project connects the dots between California's water scarcity challenges and international issues of trade, energy, politics, and security. This project was made possible with support from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, a leader in helping the world’s vulnerable and disadvantaged communities gain access to safe water.

Here and abroad, the effects of water scarcity extend beyond the possibility of drought, spilling into cross-border conflict, global trade issues, and human (in)security. What can we do to address these issues now and create a water abundant future?

One Year To Go

Since November 2016 we have organized, marched, and worked hard to build up our organizations and communities. With November 2016 almost a year behind us, we must turn our focus and energy to the 2018 elections, including here in California. That is why Latinas Lead California and California Women’s List are proud to invite you to our “One Year to Go” event in San Francisco this November.

Thousands of women have stepped up to run successful campaigns since November 2016, now is the time to make sure they have the resources to win in 2018—we have less than a year to go. Let’s come together, celebrate each other, and strategize on the year ahead.

Water Summit

Water Summit

On the blue planet, water is the source of all life – and one of the most potent sources of conflict. Without consistent access to this limited and increasingly unpredictable resource, fertile fields go barren, wildlife populations dwindle and communities suffer devastating consequences.

And yet, water offers a common denominator around which to unite. Water crises around the world are spurring innovative new technologies and inspiring diverse stakeholders to work together on equitable solutions. California tells this story like no other place.

At the Water Summit, The Atlantic will gather the leading voices in water, from environmentalists and policymakers to growers, industry leaders and community representatives, to forge a dialogue around the critical water issues of our time. With an eye toward the future, The Atlanticwill discuss the challenges, the solutions and the ways that the latest innovations can work to make water safe, reliable and accessible for years to come.
