SAN DIEGO —

About two months after her surprise announcement that she was leaving her position as head of San Diego’s efforts to solve homelessness, Hafsa Kaka has started her new job as Gov. Gavin Newsom’s senior adviser on homelessness.

“You can imagine what an amazing opportunity this is to come my way,” she said.

Kaka (pronounced Kay-ka) was hired as the director of the city of San Diego’s then-new Homelessness Strategies and Solutions Department in August of 2021.

She came to the city with 15 years of experience in social services, mental health and homelessness, and her career included jobs in Orange County and Los Angeles, where her work sometimes took her to Skid Row.
