Census armies pivot to vaccine outreach with minorities

Rep. Robin Kelly held more than a dozen briefings about the 2020 census with Black constituents in Illinois this year. California Rep. Jimmy Gomez went door-knocking in his Latino-heavy district to talk about the drive to get counted.

Now both lawmakers are part of a disparate and sprawling patchwork of nonprofits and community leaders across different cities retooling those efforts to pitch Covid-19 immunization — training their energies on many of the same Black and brown communities hard hit by the disease but hesitant to embrace the vaccine.
