Results From The California Primary
The election is over. Votes are still being counted, but we've learned a lot. Here are three storylines that developed overnight:
1. The GOP made the cut for governor. Because of California's unusual primary system, the top two vote-getters move on, regardless of party. When the campaign started, it was unclear if a GOP candidate could get enough votes to advance. Republican John Cox, boosted by support from President Trump, rose to the challenge. He'll face Democrat Gavin Newsom, the strongly favored front-runner, in November.
2. The "blue wave" kept rolling. Democrats in California appear poised to challenge for key congressional races in November. With most precincts reporting, Democrats are on track to capture second place in the Republican-held districts they aim to claim this fall.
3. Feinstein stood strong. Long-serving Sen. Dianne Feinstein faced down a challenge from her left with a commanding defense of her seat. She seems likely to hold a strong hand against state Sen. Kevin de León, a fellow Democrat.
