ArtCubed Aims to Carve Out a Sacred Space for Art and Food in LA
Earlier this week, artnet looked at ArtCubed, an upstart company merging contemporary art with food, music, film, and nightlife in immersive, pop-up settings. The company’s first event, ARTXFOOD, launches next month in LA and will feature an all-over art installation by Greg Ito and a custom menu by chef Richard Blais.
Today, a new teaser video from ArtCubed gives us another taste of what that event will look like. “I feel like people will have an idea about what they’re going to experience,” Ito says in the video. “But once they walk into the doors, they’re going to be like, ‘There’s something a little bit more to this than I thought.’”
ARTXFOOD will take place in a transparent, cube-like space designed by Ito. He’s also responsible for creating the décor, chairs, lighting, and just about everything else used in the space each night. Guests will eat a four-course meal, which was developed by Blais in response to Ito’s art.
The company also revealed the title of Ito’s installation: “Hollowed Ground”—a term that’s used to signify sacred space, Ito says. For him, art and food both present opportunities to explore those spaces. “The exhibition is a place where people will gather and share an amazing meal and see art that they’ve never seen before.”
Ariel Gordon, the founder of ArtCubed, echoes the sentiment. “There’s a real intimacy about sharing food with each other. You’re sitting next to someone, you’re bumping elbows because you’re cutting food—there’s a massive amount of community shared over the act of actually eating together.”
Tickets for ARTXFOOD are available now. The event will run six nights a week from May 11 to June 3.
