First look at the Purple Line’s Westwood stations
There’s already plenty of anticipation mounting for the opening of the Purple Line extension to Westwood. Now, newly released station renderings are adding to the mix.
The renderings, shown in a Metro presentation, give us a glimpse of the extension’s two western-most stations in Westwood—one at UCLA and another at the extension’s terminus at the VA West Los Angeles Medical Center.
The stations both feature glassy overhangs and similar colorings, but the Westwood/VA station rendering also includes a pedestrian bridge.
The Purple Line extension will be built out in three phases. The first will run from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega. It’s expected to open in 2023.
The second segment, scheduled to open in 2025, will go from La Cienega to Century City. Construction on that leg of the Purple Line is scheduled to begin this spring.
The third and final leg of the extension will run to the Veterans Administration in Westwood. That final segment is expected to open sometime in 2026. According to the presentation, the Westwood/UCLA station should open in March 2026, but there was no specific estimate on the opening of the VA station.
The presentation notes that while these dates are estimates, Metro is trying to be consistent with Measure M deadlines, which anticipated opening the extension to the VA by 2027 at the latest.
